Only Losers Use Twitter: A Question on Online Social Trends

Or so a recent NYTimes columnist seems to portray Twitter users: as people who just can't let go. Then again, it was from the perspective of a mother trying to get her teenagers to join her in social networking. Meaning that for the most part, teenagers tend to be embarrassed to associate themselves with their parents when their reputation is at stake.

“Maybe Twitter isn’t the right tool for that job,” he said. “The people who I see using it are an older demographic, people in marketing or P.R. or advertising, who use it for work, to present themselves as particular types of people. They’ll twitter, ‘I’m traveling,’ or ‘I’m going to interesting restaurants.’ They’re using it to do identity work.”

But my children didn’t see anything useful about carrying on that sort of a monologue. Their idea of communication, he said, may be more of a two-way conversation where both parties have something specific to discuss.
I guess Twitter can seem somewhat narcissistic and maybe part of it is - as with any social media - wanting to have people notice us and hear/read what we want to say. But I still say it's a great networking tool. I've met a couple of people already that I might never would have met and have plans to meet others on my follow list.

But then again, I have the same sort of sentiments that Ms. Slatalla has towards Lifecasting. If you think getting text messages of every move you make during the day, what about having a camera broadcast your every action? I'm amazed sometimes that people want to watch others play video games or watch them typing on a computer. Are we that lonely that we need to watch people broadcast mundane tasks on the internet?

Or is even about loneliness? Is it about a social need to interact.... Or about wanting to know anything and everything about everything and everyone there is to know?

What do you think?

Twitter is totally ridiculous!! Not only do I not care what my friends and relatives are doing when I'm not with them. I don't want them to know what I'm doing. What ever happened to privacy?
When I get together with friends and family, we talk about what we have been doing the last few days, weeks, or months. It's called catching up! It's what friends do.... They get TOGETHER, and TALK about their lives. That's right, TALKING TOGETHER IN PERSON!! What a concept!
As far as celebrities are concerned... are you really so lame you can't wait to be bombarded by all the BS about them as soon as the evening news ends?
Come on people... GET A LIFE. You'll find that once you have a life of your own, other peoples lives won't seem so interesting!

Well thanks for your insight. I think Twitter is still a good means for finding people with similar interests and then facilitating in-person get togethers.

the only people i know who use twitter are narcissists with either an ego or an agenda.

if you want to meet people with similar interests then surely following that interest is enough to meet like-minded people. if you make music then go to a gig or join a band; if you like a sport then join a team or go to a game; if you like pottery go on a course or visit a gallery.
if your interests don't require other peoples' participation then why would you need in-person get togethers?

go out into the wider world, there are lots of people out there!

Twitter and Facebook are for people on a huge ego trip. Of course people won't want to admit this and will justify their narcissistic actions as "networking".

Your reply is simply your ego not wanting to admit the truth. The truth being that you are on a ego trip using Twitter. The only people you meet on Twitter are other narcissistic people... but if that is what you are then I guess you get on with those sorts of people?

You certainly are entitled to your opinion. There are narssasistic people on social media. There are those folks everywhere. Just because I use Twitter doesn't automatically make me egotistical. That is a little judgemental to say something so general. Like me saying everyone who submits an anonymous comment is a coward. It's unfair and way too broad.

Thanks for your comments.

For me, Twitter still the best of all social medias as i dont know about other people's thinking but i think i m getting the best out of this social media, my friends all over the world are connected in one place, so i can say it is a ridiculous place to visit.

Can't really be bothered with twitter, i think it's just a fad that will get superceded and disappear in a year or 2

@ Telephone Service - Just so you know, Twitter launched in 2006. It's already past that 2 year "fad" mark that you are talking about.
